CREATIVE_Gone Girl

I’ve just come off a complete Gone Girl binge. First I saw the movie because I am a huge fan of David Fincher. After seeing the movie and being completely enthralled with the story, I ran over to the bookstore and picked up the book IMMEDIATELY. I could NOT put this book down … even though I already knew how the story went (usually not my MO to see movies before books but this was a pleasant surprise indeed). I didn’t sleep for two days while I devoured this book and had to question all my previous favourite authors as Gillian Flynn’s writing was so killer, it was exciting. I literally had to question all my previous thoughts on literature in general, that’s how good her writing was. Okay, maybe that’s a tad dramatic but needless to say, I loved the book.

What really got me thinking when I saw the film is that films provide amazing inspiration for visual design. They can be so visually compelling that they actually pull you directly into that world and that is something to strive for in any design format. David Fincher did not disappoint with the movie as the cinematography for Gone Girl was absolutely brilliant! You were in that world so much so that you could almost taste the heat in the air in that small town in Missouri. You could imagine hanging out in that bar “The Bar”, having a beer or a scotch on the rocks and listening to the small town gossip happening at the next table over. Any film that does this effectively is a good source reference for any designer. I think that looking at films when thinking of design is extremely smart. Films tell a story and create a vibe. Good design should do this too.
